The Stonehaven Ladies Championship eventually got completed last Tuesday. Fiona Lamont went into the third and final round with an eight stroke lead and her third score in the 70s allowed her to coast home for an eleven stroke victory over former champion Fiona Sim.
This gave Fiona her eighth success after wins in 2002 - 2008. In the bronze division Ladies Captain, Kathleen Groundwater won the scratch section with a score of 281 and Carolyn Duncan won the handicap section with a score of 212.
Leading scores - Fiona Lamont - 226 (77, 76, 73), Fiona Sim - 237 (80, 81, 76), Carolyn Duncan - 246, Catherine Duncan - 247, Rose Riddell - 252. Bronze scratch - Kathleen Groundwater - 281. Bronze handicap - Carolyn Duncan - 212.
The men started their club championship with the first two rounds over the weekend. On Saturday there were thirteen scores under 70 with Paul Lindeman heading the field with a 65 to give him a one stroke lead over Colin Arthur and young Scott Murray. Former champions Bruce Ferguson and Craig Irvine along with Chris Taylor and Kevin Riddell were a further stroke behind.
Due to the heavy showers on Sunday only seven scores under 70 were returned. Paul Lindeman maintained his form with a 68 to still head the field after 2 rounds. Craig Irvine’s best of the day 67 allowed him to move into second place alongside Scott Murray only one stroke behind Paul. Barry McGillivray and former champion Keith Douglas were a further three strokes behind in fourth place. The third and fourth rounds will be played on Wednesday and Friday this week.
Sad story of the second round came from former Captain Harry Roulston. After battling through the worst of the weather all Harry needed was a par at the last to beat his age but regrettfully he double bogied the hole for a score of 71. Despite this he still qualified for the final two rounds much to the disgust of David Callaghan and Stuart Allsop who were jointly holding last place at the time.
Qualifiers for the final two rounds - Paul Lindeman - 133 (65, 68), Craig Irvine - 134 (67, 67), Scott Murray - 134 (66, 68), Barry McGillivray - 137 (69, 68), Keith Douglas - 137(68, 69), Steve Guzik - 138 (69, 69), Colin Arthur - 138 (66, 72), Neil Irvine, Graeme Adamson, Iain Taylor, Bruce Ferguson - 140, Stuart Dempster, Chris Taylor, Kevin Riddell - 141, Neil Robertson - 142, Steven Shand - 143, Josh Halliday - 144, Alan Cruickshank, Chris Brown, Craig Martin - 145, Grant Robb - 146, Stuart Wright, Graeme Docherty - 148, Harry Roulston - 149.
