Bervie come out on top

After the previous weeks disappointing Scottish Cup exit Bervie returned to league action with a trip north to Monymusk to face Kemnay.

Kemnay started briskly pushing forward down Bervie’s left hand side, however Montgomerie did well to get a challenge in finding Collie who fed Smith, his ball down the right to Blacklaw was intercepted.

Bervie almost got in on goal when Montgomerie played a ball through for Collie however the keeper was off his line quickly to clear. The first goal went to kemnay following a mistake by the Bervie defence giving possession to the home side leaving the forward a tap in at the back post.

From the restart Bervie attempted to play some neat short passes however they were finding it difficult to break the home team’s defence down, Kemnay nearly doubled their lead when awarded a free kick and with Bervie unable to get their wall set up properly the home side struck the bar from the free kick.

This seemed to instil some urgency into Bervie’s play, Smith’s clearance found Blacklaw on the right who pulled the ball back to Webster whose well placed effort found the back of the net to level the match.

Instead of building on this Bervie again struggled to keep possession, getting into difficultly needlessly. Montgomerie was however Bervie’s most likely player to unlock the home sides defence and he showed great strength to hold off the defender on the right hand side before swinging the ball in for Collie who was lurking at the back post, however the keeper did well to stretch and get a hand to the ball.

Just before half time Kemnay regained the lead when Bervie once again got themselves into difficulty and failed to clear the ball properly allowing the striker to place the ball past Edwards who had little chance.

After a disappointing first half Bervie made 3 changes at half time in an attempt to get back into the match and were on the front foot from the start, Blacklaw doing well on the right hand side to beat his man and swing the ball across which found Anderson at the back post who won the corner. From the corner Blacklaw swung the ball back across finding McLaughlin whose effort was saved.

Next to try their luck was Montgomerie, McLaughlin finding Collie who teed up Montgomerie but effort went over. The substitutions were having the desired effect and Bervie were looking far more dangerous coming close when Anderson did well to hold off the defender and feed Montgomerie who fed McLaughlin however his effort went over. Bervie got themselves back on level terms when Avis did well to win the ball back on the right and feed Montgomerie, his ball across found Anderson at the back post who slotted home to level the match.

Buoyed with the goal McLaughlin and Collie were combing well and it was Collie who did well to switch the ball out to the right and find Blacklaw his effort though was saved by the keeper. Montgomerie then did well to beat 2 and feed Sawyer, his ball in found McLaughlin with his effort again saved. Bervie took the lead for the first time in the match when Anderson intercepted the ball in the centre circle feeding Montgomerie his ball forward found Collie who calmly slotted the ball home.

Losing the lead seemed to regenerate Kemnay and they were once again looking dangerous, the ball was played into the striker on the edge of the box however a thunderous challenge from Gordon stopped him in his tracks. The ball was cleared forward by Avis to Anderson on the left who pulled the ball back for Collie however the defender managed to get a foot in as he was about to get an effort away.

Bervie doubled their lead when Blacklaw was played in down the right and pulled the ball back for Collie who was first the ball and slotted home.

Kemnay refused to lie down though and Davis had to be alert to make a fine sliding challenge in his own box to prevent another goal scoring opportunity, however the home sides pressure paid off when they were awarded a free kick on Bervie left hand side, a well flighted ball to the back post caused confusion and the ball was scrambled home for a consolation goal.
