The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges and, following a poor clearance with the bobbly pitch to blame, debutant Fraser Stark did well to gather at the feet of Callum Innes on the eighth minute.

Workman had a great chance when a Martin Shand free kick fell to him at the back post but he dragged his shot wide of the goal.

A minute later, Hall Russell broke upfield and the ball was slipped wide and the ball found Innes but he failed to make proper contact and Stark saved well at his feet to prevent a certain goal.

There was a scramble in the Hive penalty area two minutes later following a free kick but nobody was able to find the clinical touch to open the scoring.

With five minutes to go before the break, Martin Shand had a chance when he seized upon a slack back pass but his shot was tame and easily held by Simpson.

Martin Shand had the last chance of the half when he picked the ball up on the edge of the area but his turn and shot went wide of goal.

Lewis Shand had the first chance of the second half but his header went over the bar from a Wilson cross.

Philip Low had to be alert two minutes later and he produced a great sliding tackle to block a shot inside the Hive area.

On the 51st minute, a ball into the Hive box saw the defence scramble the ball clear.

The visitors took the lead after 54 minutes when Lewis Shand’s ball back into the box following a Watt cross was spilled by Simpson and Workman found the net from a couple of yards out with what couldn’t be classed as the cleanest of finishes as it went in with the aid of the legs of the Hall Russell ‘keeper.

Just after the hour mark Campbell Watt’s free kick was cleared off the line as nobody in a yellow shirt was able to find the touch needed to turn it over the line. With 68 minutes gone, Campbell Watt was unlucky to see his excellent free kick tipped over the crossbar by Simpson.

The home side came close with just under five minutes remaining when Whitfield’s header came back off the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

In the last minute, good play from Duncan and Armstrong saw the latter fire a shot at goal which was blocked for a corner but there was no one able to get a head on it and the game finished with the Hive taking all three points.
