The Glenfiddich Distillery has added thousands of pounds to the prize fund for Heavy Athletes competing in this year’s Grampian Games Heavy Events as part of an up-weighted sponsorship deal.
The Grampian Games is a series of twelve events that take place across the North East throughout the summer months. Glenfiddich has sponsored the Heavy Events element of the Games for 28 years and has upped its five-figure pledge by almost 25% in a bid to ensure the continuation of this spectacular element of each Highland Games.
Jim Brown, Chairman of the Grampian Games Association said: “We are delighted with the long-standing commitment Glenfiddich has shown to our sport. At a time when everyone is feeling financial pressure the added sponsorship funding is a fabulous boost for the Games.”
In addition to providing cash prizes on the day at each of the Games Glenfiddich also finances the Heavies’ League which runs across all 12 events and has a top prize of £3000 for the winner of the Glenfiddich Open Championship (open to all heavy athletes) and £900 for the winner of the Glenfiddich Qualifying Championship (open to athletes aged 18 -25).
Glenfiddich also supports the events through marketing activity, providing bottles of single malt Scotch whisky as prizes plus clothing and complimentary picnic lunch boxes for the heavy athletes.
Elizabeth Lafferty, PR manager for Glenfiddich in Scotland said “Highland Games are an important aspect of Scotland’s traditional cultural heritage and provide a wonderful way for local people and visitors to Scotland to mix and enjoy a great day out. Glenfiddich is committed to encouraging people to express their “pioneering spirit” and reach their full potential. By sponsoring the Games we are looking to encourage and reward the Heavy Athletes who are doing just this.”
The Grampian Games events for 2011 include Drumtochty on Saturday June 25 and Stonehaven on Sunday, July 17.
