Luther lose to title chasers

Luthermuir 2 Hazlehead 4 LUTHERMUIR entertained title chasing Hazlehead on Monday.

The hosts were first to threaten when some good work by Walker put McCombie in on goal but the keeper tipped his effort round the post.

Hazlehead fashioned a half chance which Howe blocked for a corner which was cleared.

Luthermuir opened the scoring in 20 minutes after a foul on Walker. Scott McCombie smashed in the 20 yard free-kick which went in off the post.

Hazlehead were not to be denied and equalised in 35 minutes when a back post corner was headed back across goal and into the six yard box before being stabbed over the line.

Luthermuir created another excellent chance in 40 minutes when Walker's flick sent McCombie clear on goal and he steadied himself before drilling a low right foot shot past the goalkeeper, but the ball rebounded off the same post and this time away to safety for a big let off for Hazlehead.

Luthermuir made the early running in the second half and had the first chance from a corner, with the Hazlehead goalkeeper saving Darar's header.

Luthermuir pressed forward and got their second goal in 65 minutes when Greig played the ball to Duff who laid it into the path of Murdoch Anderson and his 20 yard effort found the bottom corner.

The turning point of the match came in 70 minutes when Howe made an excellent double save but his defence failed to react to both saves and missed opportunities to clear the ball from the danger area. Hazlehead made no mistake with the third effort which arrowed across the grounded Howe and in at the far post.

Having played so well in the second half, Luthermuir had a crazy five minute spell where they lost their shape and a third goal in 75 minutes.

Luthermuir regrouped and continued to take the game to their opponents. Duff sent a header inches over the bar in 80 minutes and Glover headed powerfully towards goal but the keeper saved on the line.

Typically, with Luthermuir pressing high up the field, Hazlehead hit them on the counter-attack in the final minutes when a Luthermuir corner was cleared and the visitors broke upfield quickly and the ball was lofted over Howe.

Luthermuir: Howe, Darar, G. Lindsay (Glover), S. Lindsay (M. Robertson), S. Robertson, Slesser, Duff, Walker (R. Arthur), M. Anderson, S. McCombie, Greig. Subs: Kelly, Reid.
