With one eye on the winter break Mackie 2s welcomed Deeside to Redcloak. The game was pretty evenly matched for the first 10 minutes before good work in the ruck by Deeside allowed their big number 8 to power over the line. The try was converted. Mackie were struggling to get a grip of the game and soon found themselves another score down, this time giving away a penalty which was duly converted.
Captain Ali Pittendreigh riled up the troops and a determined series of forward play had the reds deep in Deeside territory. Deeside soon gave away two penalties for persistent off side and hands in the ruck, both converted by hooker Reddish. A series of good scrums by Deeside and some delicate hands from their quick number 10 saw them run in another try, again converted. Mackie where soon up and at them, making it over the line through Cherronne Roux. Reddish converted the try. A series of missed tackles allowed the greens to score a converted try under the posts.
In the second half, Deeside ran through the Mackie midfield to score. Deeside were now piling on the pressure and injuries to key men, Cherronne Roux and Pittendreigh led to another reshuffle and Deeside ran in two more unconverted tries.
The referee blew for full-time and although they had put in plenty of effort Mackie had lost. There were plenty of positives to be had and Deeside had to play at the top of their game to get their win. Next up at Redcloak is the annual Boxing Day fixture President’s XV v Captain’s XV.
