Mearns in goal romp

Alford 1 Mearns United 12 MEARNS United continued their promotion push with a 12-1 crushing of bottom side Alford.

Alford didn't help their cause by having a player sent off in each half, but in reality they were well beaten after the first quarter of the game.

Mearns took the lead in seven minutes when Craig Horner shot home after the ball came back off the keeper.

It was 2-0 when a big kick from Mearns keeper Black was headed past his own goalkeeper by an Alford defender.

Horner shot into the top corner for 3-0, then Ryan Stewart beat three players out on the left and shot across the keeper.

Mearns looked for more and when a pass from Law was flicked on by Horner, Craig Irvine sidefooted home.

It was 6-0 in 39 minutes when Horner was brought down and Chris Black came out of goal to score from the spot.

Alford scored right on half-time when a cross-cum-shot sailed into the top corner.

Mearns were even more dominant after the break and in 51 minutes, a through ball from Bruce was smashed home by Stevie Law.

Five minutes later, Horner cut the ball back for Stuart Scott to sidefoot home.

The promotion-chasers scored a ninth when Irvine broke on the left and cut the ball back for Horner to complete his hat-trick.

Gary Legg brought up double figures in 69 minutes when he shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

In 76 minutes, substitute Kyle Duncan beat two men before netting, then the scoring was complete when Legg crossed for Craig Whyte to volley home.

Mearns need seven points from their final four games to seal promotion to Division One.
