Mearns hit seven

Mearns United 7 Potterton 2 MEARNS United went second in the league with a resounding victory over Potterton on Saturday.

Mearns took the lead in nine minutes. Haggart sent in a free-kick and Craig Irvine scored on the far post.

Potterton were dogged opponents in the first half and equalised in 40 minutes when a cross from the right was headed home.

United wasted no time in taking control in the second half and they blitzed the Aberdeen side with four goals in the space of six minutes.

In 50 minutes, Stewart crossed for Irvine to slot home.

In 53 minutes, Stewart Scott was brought down and Craig Horner scored from the penalty spot.

Two minutes later, another Potterton foul gave Mearns a second penalty and again Horner made no mistake from 12 yards.

Just a minute later, a cross from Stewart found Horner a couple of yards out and he tapped home to complete a hat-trick in the space of three minutes.

Potterton scored a second goal on the hour mark.

Mearns made it 6-2 in 68 minutes when Irvine cut in from the left and fired the ball inside the far post.

Mearns wrapped things up in 79 minutes with their best goal of the game. Ryan Stewart beat two men and flicked to Irvine. Irvine beat a man and got the ball back to Stewart who curled a beauty into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Mearns have only lost once in the league this season and the defeat came in the committee room not on the field. Back on August 15 Mearns asked for a free day when they were due to play Ellon Amateurs. League officials said the request had not been received and that Mearns should lose the points.

Ironically, Ellon are now United's main rivals for the league title and are the only side in front of them at present, although with more games played.
