Members of the Grampian Tigers Stonehaven are getting set up for their first club event with a race at the beginning of November.

The local youth cycle club will mark the end of a successful year of youth coaching by hosting an off-road cycle race at Knockburn Loch.

Established in April, to cater for the growing number of local children out and about by bike, the satellite club was set up as an offshoot of the long-established Grampian Tigers Aberdeen.

The club caters for riders aged 7 – 14 and focuses on three main disciplines of cycling; road, mountain bike and cyclocross.

Charlie Barrow, from the Grampian Tigers, said: “The club is run by a committee that includes four Stonehaven-based coaches as well as visiting ones from Aberdeen.

“All coaches are qualified to British Cycling Level 2 standard and come from a range of disciplines and racing backgrounds. The emphasis is to have fun safely on two wheels while learning a range of skills to help with everyday riding.

“However, with a growing race calendar around Aberdeenshire, the aim is also to give children a taste of competitive riding in a safe and friendly environment with the option of racing in regional and national youth series.

“The Grampian Tigers’ first club-hosted event will take place at Knockburn Loch, near Banchory, on November 1 where children will race laps of an off-road course against riders from other Aberdeenshire-based clubs such as Deeside Thistle CC & Ythan CC.”

The club is looking for more volunteers and coaches for the Stonehaven and Aberdeen clubs.

The club will support volunteers through their cycle coaching qualifications and there is the option for additional Discipline Specific qualifications.
