Sixteen keen badminton players once again made the trip south to Ravenscraig to compete in the Scottish Secondary Schools National Quaich Team event last week.

Mackie Academy was representing the North East Schools and had teams in both junior, U14, and senior, U19, events.

In the junior event all players excelled showing great skill and composure and really working together as a team in all disciplines. Every player contributed to their success, winning fourout of their five group matches, only losing the fifth in a closely contested 3-2 defeat to North Berwick.

It was disappointing that only the group winners progressed to the final but Mackie were a very proud and well deserved third equal.

In the senior event, the players went one step further winning their group but not without some tough games. With one first year and two second years in the senior team it was always going to be challenging. A win in the group stage earned them a semi- final tie against Carluke which on paper looked tricky.

With some terrific play from all team members, the 5-0 result secured their place in the final against Stewarts Melville and Lady Mary Erskine from Edinburgh. Some very shrewd partnership selections certainly worked in Mackie’s favour, winning the three opening matches, 22-20, 21-16 and 21-17 to retain the title won last year. It was a fantastic achievement and very well deserved success. Mackie continue to reinforce their position at the top when it comes to the sport of badminton.
