Three previous members of Stonehaven Otters, Andrew Leiper, Morven Leiper, Bhen Linton, along with their coach of 15 years ago, Richard Linton, took part in one of the world’s most well renowned open water swims from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island near Perth, Western Australia. Along with over 2000 other swimmers they covered the 19.7km distance in a time of five hours and 54 minutes as a team of four, placing them 11th in their category of 60, and swam as “Stonehaven Otters Reunited.” The run-up to the event was marred with bad luck with their support vessel pulling out 12 hours before the race owing to engine problems which, after a frantic search, was replaced by a yacht at the last minute.
The four all had battle scars from ‘stingers’ (jellyfish) at the end of the swim but managed to avoid a two-metre shark that was spotted by race helicopters! It was a great effort from the ex-locals at the other side of the globe.
