Portlethen top league

Portlethen United marched on at the top of Division One East of the Aberdeenshire Amateur League with a win over Stonehaven Athletic on January 21.

The local derby went ahead following an early morning pitch inspection with the home side looking to get back to winning ways and the visitors looking to maintain their grip at the top of the table.

It was the visitors who were in the early ascendancy and they took the lead after 15 minutes. A break down the left led to the visiting forward firing the ball across the box. After poor defending, the ball broke back to him and he fired in from the angle.

Stern words from Manager Jolly resulted in the home side coming back into the game with chances created at both ends. Most notably being an effort from Toner that went high and wide for the home side and an effort for the visitors that was fired over with the home goal gaping.

With half-time approaching, the visitors increased their lead following an error by Middleton in the home goal. A cross from the right was dropped at the feet of the onrushing striker who was left with the simplest of tasks to slot the ball home.

The second half continued in much the same vein with the visitors further increasing their lead. R McKenzie lost the ball in midfield and when the resultant ball was played into box, in trying to atone for his error, McKenzie only ended up knocking into his own goal.

Elliott was sent on for the home side to try and inject some urgency but to no avail.

This was an extremely disappointing display by the home side who must improve on this quickly if they are not to find themselves dragged into a battle to stay in Division One.
