Revenge win for Luther

Luthermuir 3 Tarves 1 LUTHERMUIR started Saturday's game keen to avenge a 3-1 defeat in the League Cup just weeks before.

Tarves started well and took the lead with only 15 minutes played when the ball was worked to the edge of the box and a shot was fired in.

Howe did well to block the shot but a Tarves player had time to control the rebound before lifting the ball into the net over Howe and the retreating defenders.

Luthermuir equalised five minutes later. Duff played a good ball over the top of the Tarves defence for Murdoch Anderson to chase with a Tarves defender.

The defender tried to head the ball back to his keeper but misjudged the bounce and Anderson reached his header first and fired the ball low under the advancing keeper.

The rest of the half ebbed and flowed with both sides playing some good football despite not having any real clear cut opportunities.

Luthermuir were the better side at the start of the second half. Anderson did excellently down the right and his low cross was fired over the bar by Scott McCombie.

Howe gathered a couple of through balls before Luthermuir got their noses in front in 60 minutes. Howe made a routine save before kicking the ball long for Anderson.

Anderson was again in a footrace with a Tarves defender and the keeper. The keeper dived at the feet of Anderson but succeeded only in taking down his own defender and letting the ball run loose but wide.

Anderson retrieved the ball and, with a defender back on the line, played a square pass to Ewan Slesser who had made an excellent supporting run and slotted home from 6 yards.

Luthermuir had their tails up and Anderson, McCombie, Darar and Duff all went close before Luthermuir sealed the win with 20 minutes to play.

Stuart Lindsay won a tackle midway inside his own half and played an excellent pass through for Anderson to beat the offside trap and chip the ball over the Tarves keeper.

The final stages saw Luthermuir lose Stuart Lindsay to injury and Tarves forced the play, but the Luthermuir defence remained defiant to record a crucial win and effectively end the Tarves championship chances.

Luthermuir: Howe, Darar, G. Lindsay, S. Lindsay (Walker), S. Robertson, Slesser (Reid) N. Arthur, Duff, M. Anderson, S. McCombie, Greig (Fotheringham). Sub: M. Robertson.
