Stonehaven made the journey to The Meadows on Saturday to face Ellon United as they looked to continue their unbeaten start to the Superleague campaign but also to register their first win.
It took only nine minutes for The Hive to take the lead and it was former Ellon United player Forsyth who was played through on goal and lobbed Gatt. In 16 minutes Watt sent in an inswinging corner which found the head of Forsyth but he could only send his effort wide. Max Alexander was next to threaten with 22 minutes gone. He picked up a ball on the wing and did well to get in a cross, but the defence just about cleared. A long throw from Alsopp on 24 minutes found Ellon’s Ryan Stewart but his shot was dragged wide. Darren Taylor was inches away from doubling The Hive’s advantage on 31 minutes when he picked the ball, up ran forward a couple of yards and saw his left foot effort crash off the far post. It wasn’t long before the lead was increased however and it was Forsyth who did the damage again. He was slipped through and nicked the ball past Gatt and it just about crept over the line. With five minutes left in the first half Smith did well to save with his feet when Ellon broke and Whelan shot. Stonehaven had a couples of half chances through Alexander and Winton but were unable to add to the scoresheet and went in at half time two goals to the good.
Two minutes into the second half Max Alexander had the chance to increase Stonehaven’s lead when he capitalised on a defensive slip but his shot was saved by the feet of Gatt.
Three minutes later Stewart sent in a corner which found the head of Taylor but he could only send his header wide of target. Ellon came back into the game on 53 minutes when a ball down the Hive left was crossed in, headed back across goal and turned in at the back post.
Stonehaven continued to threaten and on 64 minutes Lewis Shand broke forward and his cross was cleared at the front post and out for a corner. It was the hosts who were next to threaten and with 20 minutes left to play a long throw wasn’t cleared and the ball found the back of the net to level the scores. With 73 minutes gone the hosts took the lead when a Leahy shot found the net via the far post.
Forsyth and Alexander had half chances in the last few minutes to snatch an equaliser but it wasn’t to be and the hosts took all three points.
