Scotstoun stadium, Glasgow, was the venue for last Saturdays Under 14 Scottish National Athletics Championships and local club Banchory Stonehaven AA was well represented.
Despite very changeable weather conditions the young athletes were undeterred. Following great disappointment for local athlete Matthew Duguid in the 100m event where the event time was changed meaning he could not compete, he certainly put this disappointment behind him giving full attention to his other three events.
In the high jump Matthew was the last man standing at 1.5m and continued winning gold with a new PB of 1.55m. This was followed with a superb performance in the discus where he secured a bronze medal with a throw of 22.93m. Matthew’s day was completed in fine style when after winning his 200m heat comfortably, achieving a second PB of the day with a time of 26.85s, he went on to take another bronze medal losing out narrowly to Liam Woodman, Annan District AA, Edinburgh’s Silvano Marcantonio winning the gold in 25.16s.
In the girls event Banchory’s Alisha Rees also competed well winning a bronze in the 100m event in a time of 13.16s and was desperately unlucky not to repeat this in the 200m where she was pipped on the line to finish in 4th place. Eve Sealy also competed well in both the 100m and 800m events.
