Unlucky to be relegated

JOHNSHAVEN Athletic FC ended the 2009-10 season relegated from Division One East of the Aberdeenshire Amateur League, but can consider themselves very unlucky to take the drop.

Athletic found themselves in third-bottom spot, just one win from safety and over the course of the 26-game season, should certainly have secured enough points to save themselves.

Johnshaven did well at home against the promoted sides. They drew with champions Woodside and thumped second-placed Kintore 4-1.

Other notable home wins were 5-3 against both Newmachar and near-neighbours Bervie, but crucial points were dropped against the bottom two teams, Burghmuir and Postal and against Glendale Youth in the final home match of the season.

Athletic only took 12 points away from home, but that included a 3-2 win over Bervie, meaning they did a notable league double over Caley.

Johnshaven's league record was: Woodside D1-1 (h) L0-4 (a); Kintore W4-1 (h) L0-2 (a); Blackburn L1-3 (h) D3-3 (a); West End D1-1 (h) D2-2 (a); Newmachar W5-3 (h) L1-7 (a); Bervie W5-3 (h) W3-2 (a).

RGU L0-5 (h) W3-2 (a); Insch W4-3 (h) L2-3 (a); Glendale L1-2 (h) L0-2 (a); FC Geldie W4-2 (h) L2-3 (a); Glendale Youth L1-3 (h) D1-1 (a); Postal L2-3 (h) W2-1 (a); Burghmuir D3-3 (h) L3-5 (a).

Johnshaven had a home record of W5 D3 L5 F32 A33 and an away record of W3 D3 L7 F22 A37 for an overall W8 D6 L12 F54 A70 Pts30.

Athletic's only cup success came in the North of Scotland Cup. They beat Stoneywood Amateurs 2-0 in round two, then Grammar Rovers 4-3, before losing 3-2 (aet) away to Rothie Rovers.

They lost 5-2 to Premier Division side Hazlehead in the Association Cup and 4-0 to another Premier outfit Banchory in the AFC trophy.

In the White Cup they lost 4-0 in the first round to eventual winners Woodside.

Johnshaven scored just ten cup goals, giving them a total of 64 for the season.

There was keen competition for top scorer. Robert Milne finished on top with 11 goals, just ahead of Ross Blease with nine, Leon Dundas with eight and Andy Tringham with seven.

Other tallies were Bruce Carnegie with five, Dave McKay with four, Leven, Bickerstaff and Beedie with three, Cruickshank, Scott, Reid and Smith with two and Philip, Sean Blease and a trialist each with one.

There were two hat-tricks during the season, Leon Dundas in the home match with Bervie and Bickerstaff at home to Insch.
