Laurencekirk Bowling Club receives £3000 cash boost

Laurencekirk Bowling Club has been granted £3000 to install an automatic irrigaion system for the green.

Bowling club members Bill Russell and Isobel Smith addressed councillors at the Kincardine and Mearns area committee meeting at Viewmount on Tuesday. They explained that, currently, the green was watered manually, but it was time consuming, and the greenkeeper would be retiring this year, leaving no one to carry out the task. Total cost of the project is £8839.07 and the balance will be funded by the club. The committee heard that the club will raise money with coffee mornings, soup and sweet lunches and other fundraisers.

Mr Russell explained that the green was almost lost last year after it was not watered regularly enough.

This year club membership has increased from 36 to 48 full members, and Ms Smith told councillors that the bowling club was a vital amenity to many in Laurencekirk and the surrounding area.

She said: “We get new members of all ages and primary children coming along, but the benefits to the older generation, in particular, are immense.”
