Stonehaven Library is one of several across Aberdeenshire that will be peeking into the murky world of crime and mystery with author events and other activties throughout October.

The programme of events began when Ann Cleves, best-sellling novelist and creator of the Vera and Shetland television series, hosted a murder mystery event at Portlethen Library.

And James Oswald, author of six Detective Inspector Maclean series, appeared at Mearns Community Campus library to talk about his work.

But there’s still plenty of time to get involved in Crimefest. A special event at Stonehaven Library on Monday, October 24 will discuss the question ‘How real is fiction when it comes to forensic facts of a case?’ The fascinating question will be explored by Professor Lorna Dawson and crime writer Lin Anderson.

Or, if you would like to try your hand at crime fiction, then Aberdeen mystery writer Bill Kirton will be on hand to assist with crime writing workshops at Mearns Community Campus Library on Monday, October 26.

All events are free. Booking is advised and can be done by contacting libraries locally. For more information and full listings visit

Please note the events are aimed primarily at adults and young adults and may not be suitable for younger members of the family.
