Calling all Mearns cyclists, the annual Great Stonehaven Bike Ride is due to take place on September 1 with places still available.

This is an opportunity for Mearns families who enjoy cycling, as well as seasoned campaigners, to see some of the beautiful Mearns countryside and at the same time to raise much needed funds for North East Sensory Services, a local independent charity – so all money raised stays local!

The sponsored ride, which starts and finishes at Stonehaven Scout Hut has raised thousands over the years for NESS who were formally known as Grampian Society for the Blind.

NESS now provides services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people as well as continuing to assist Blind and partially sighted people in one joint Sensory Service.

Cyclist’s ride 25 miles on what is described as a challenging, but enjoyable circular route around the Mearns countryside with a shorter, 11-mile family friendly route also on offer.

This 25 mile course is open to both adult and junior entrants, but junior entrants must be accompanied by an adult entrant.

The routes are very well marked, even for the failed orienteers among us, with refreshment stops provided.

The Great Stonehaven Bike Ride has been staged for around 20 years with the money raised always going to the same charity.

Entries can be made online at or entry packs and further information are available from the North East Sensory Services,NESS website
