Dad fundraising in memory of daughter
FOLLOWING the tragic death of his daughter last year a Portlethen man is going to be taking part in a charity run from Lands End to John O’ Groats in his classic 1966 Ford Cortina.
Kevin Tawse lost his daughter Kelly to cancer last year when she was only twenty nine.
Kelly left behind her six-year-old Ruaridh and her partner Andy McDougall.
In memory of his daughter Kevin is taking part in fund-raising for Cancer Research UK and on Monday May 4 he will get behind the wheel of his 1966 Ford Cortina to drive over one thousand miles.
Taking on such a large drive in a classic car comes with challenges, particularly as he will have to return to Portlethen from John O’ Groats so will be driving an even greater distance.
Kevin explains that driving a classic car is very different to modern cars.
He said: “It is when you drive a car of this age you realise how far comfort has improved with modern cars.
“However, the smiles you get from people who appreciate a classic car are a fitting tribute to Kelly.”
The charity run Kevin is taking part in is being organised by the mk1 owners club and will begin on the morning of Friday May 4 at Lands End and finish at night on Sunday May 6 in John O’ Groats.
This year marks 50 years since the Cortina rolled off the production line in Dagenham and it is hoped that between 20 and 30 Cortinas will take part in the drive.
The car Kevin will be driving is a 1966 Ford Cortina GT, one of the last mk1’s made. Ford made over one million Cortinas over 4 years. In the past two years Kevin’s car has been stripped down and rebuilt with all of the original equipment fitted back on apart from some practical modern updates. These updates include Halogen headlights, uprated alternator, radial tyres and the engine modified.
Kevin will be setting off on his journey in memory of Kelly and will be raising money for Cancer charity Cancer research UK.
Cancer research is the leading cancer charity in the world and is dedicated to beating cancer through research.
