Discount supermarket now interested in Stonehaven
Lidl have said that Stonehaven remains an ‘area of interest’ as the call for a supermarket to serve the local area intensifies.
The need for a supermarket in the town has been an issue with residents for years, with many calling on it to be made a priority.
This week the Mearns Leader contacted both discount supermarkets - Aldi and Lidl - and asked them directly if they were looking to open up in the town. Aldi had not responded to our request before the Mearns Leader went to print yesterday (Wednesday).
However, a statement from Lidl said: “Although we are not currently considering any specific sites, Stonehaven remains an area of interest.
‘‘Furthermore, the local community tells us that they are keen to have a Lidl store there.
“In addition, should anyone wish to submit information for potential sites, please see our property website.”
The Mearns Leader and Kincardineshire Observer Facebook Page was inundated with comments after last week’s decision by the Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee to reject two separate proposals.
Plans for a supermarket, hotel, restaurant and petrol filling station at Ury Estate were turned down as well as plans for 1500 homes, a supermarket, school and community facilities, a health centre and dentist, retail and business units at Kirkton of Fetteresso.
Both of the applications will go before full council on November 20 for a final decision.
