Mackie Academy were crowned the Scottish Rock Challenge winners at the finals last Friday night in Dundee.
Around 100 pupils and four staff members were present at the Caird Hall for the Scottish Finals of the Rock Challenge 2013.
Twelve schools took part in the competition which sees a five to eight minute dance drama performance. Rehearsals took place throughout the day for each school.
The academy performance was entitled ‘Hooked’ and was based on Peter Pan with a theme of the adverse effects of drug taking.
As might be imagined, the pupils and staff involved went wild when the five representatives who had been on stage for the awards ceremony returned to the dressing room with the first place plaque.
As well as winning the competition outright, the team also won awards for choreography, soundtrack and “performers” choice” – which they had been nominated for by the other teams taking part.
Ten per cent of the school population took part in the Rock challenge.
Acting rector Jennifer McDonald was delighted the student led effort paid off.
She said: “This is a fantastic and well deserved win.
“The pupils put in a huge amount of work, this really was the spirit of Rock Challenge.
“It was student-led in every respect from coming up with the concept through to performance.
“I was so pleased for them last Friday night when the result was announced- and, to put it mildly, so were the youngsters.’’
