Folk Festival will attract foreign visitors

Enquiries and ticket sales are coming from all around the world for this year’s Stonehaven Folk Festival. Tickets have been sold to the USA, Norway and Denmark plus there have been many enquiries from across Europe including Italy and Germany.

The Festival regularly draws folk from around the world and is recognised as one of the best in Scotland. This year’s headliners are proving particularly attractive as they are playing one off concerts so it is a rare chance to see them this summer.

Julie Fowlis with her band, featuring Duncan Chisholm on fiddle, are flying in directly from Norway at the end of a small mini-tour in Europe.

Julie was a live guest on the Radio 2 “2 Day” programme with Ken Bruce and Bob Harris. Session A9 are also very popular having recently completed a tour of the Highlands and Islands.

Festival organiser Charlie West said “It is great to see so much interest in the Festival from abroad. It is good for us and also good for the local businesses that also benefit from the extra trade.”

Curiously the World Championship Paper’n’Comb competition has caught people’s interest with several enquiries to explain the rules of the competition. They are delighted when they find it is a fun competition for the family which anyone can join in with.

This year’s theme is the Wild West so watch out for lots of cowboy puns. The organisers are keen to promote more family events and will have a family ceilidh on the Sunday afternoon.

Festival Youth Co-ordinator Kevin Clark said “We are really keen to get young families involved in the fun of the Festival, we are developing the Cowie Fringe on Sunday afternoon to be a really family friendly afternoon.”

The festival runs over the weekend of 8-10 July and features Concerts, Sessions, Workshops, Open Stage concerts, Tradition Bearers Concert plus The Aqua Ceilidh and the Cowie Fringe.
