Work to replace a footbridge between Newtonhill and Muchalls, over the Pheppie Burn, has finally been

During last winter’s downpours, the original wooden bridge was swept away after the normally placid burn turned into a raging torrent.

Aberdeenshire Council arranged for the footbridge to be replaced as the route is part of its core paths network along the coast.

Local councillor Ian Mollison said: “As well as being used for recreational purposes, the route can also be used by people walking from Muchalls to shops in Newtonhill. It can also be used by pupils going to the primary school.

‘‘There is a ford, but it can be treacherous when the water levels rise.

“I was delighted to hear that work had begun on replacing the bridge slightly downstream where it will be better protected from floods.

‘‘The surrounding paths are also being upgraded as part of the work.”
