THE 2012 Stonehaven Highland Games have been cancelled. The games, which were due to be held at Glenury Park/Mineralwell this Sunday, have become the latest victim of the rain which has been incessant all summer so far and has already cancelled numerous games and shows across the country.
Games chairman Roger Barnett said: “The whole area used by the games is waterlogged, including Baird Park which we use for car parking.
“We were not prepared to ruin four football pitches and make them unplayable for months.
“The games began in 1978 and as far as I am aware, this is the first time they have ever been cancelled.
“We took the decision on Saturday morning as everyone deserved to know as early as possible where they stood.”
The Stonehaven Highland Games have gone the same way as the neighbouring Drumtochty Games, which were cancelled on June 23.
More recently, the Fettercairn Agricultural Show bit the dust on July 7.
