The chips are up for Hornblowers in Gourdon after taking top prize for Scotland in the UK-wide The Choice Chip Awards.
The fish and chip shop, which is situated under the main restaurant beside the picturesque 19th century harbour, battled it out against 900 other establishments across the UK for the accolade of being named as having the country’s Best Chippy Chips.
This year a record number of 68,000 chip-loving Brits voted for their favourite chip shop out of 900 entrants across ten regions in the UK.
Owners Alex and Ruth Grahame said they were delighted at winning the competition, which is run by the National Potato Council, after entering it for the third year running.
Alex said: “This is fantastic that we’ve won the competition in Scotland and we’d like to thank our customers - old and new - for voting for us.
“This is only our third year that we’ve been put forward for the award so to win it is a great tribute to our staff as they help make the friendly atmosphere in the takeaway and the restaurant which customers come back for.
“We source our potatoes for our chips locally from WM Fraser as we have some of the country’s best produce on our doorstep.
“We get delicious Agria potatoes which we cut ourselves and double fry in beef dripping for fluffy and crispy chips - most other chips shops use Markies or Maris Piper but we believe the flavour and look of the Agria is an all round winner.
“Our menu changes every day as it depends on the fish landed that morning at Gourdon and Peterhead so it’s great that people return again and again.
“We’re really delighted at winning this award and we will, of course, replicate our award-winning chips at our new restaurant at Aberdeen’s beachfront which is due to open next year.”
Aberdeen-based TCD Architects, on behalf of site owners Rossnow Leisure, have applied for full planning permission to build five new commercial units totalling 26,000sq ft, including Hornblowers on the former Jimmy Chungs/TC Fish Restaurant site which was gutted by a huge fire a year ago (Feb 2014).
Alex and Ruth have been working with Rossnow Leisure and TCD Architects on their new facilities, which will include a restaurant, takeaway and ice cream parlour on the Beach Esplanade in Aberdeen.
