Inner Wheel Club of Laurencekirk

The members of the Inner Wheel Club were once again privileged to welcome Nila Monkton as the guest speaker, at the monthly meeting held last week at the Panmure Arms Hotel, Edzell. Once again we were on another journey of discovery!

Nila and her family journeyed across Europe, Russia, Mongolia and China. They travelled by Eurostar to Brussels and then onto Cologne, Warsaw and Moscow. It was from Moscow that the truly amazing part of this epic journey began. September in Siberia brought the most amazing colour changes as they passed both pine and birch forests.

Along the shores of the world’s largest fresh water lake, Lake Baikal, passengers were encouraged to leave the train and walk along the single track ahead of the locomotive to photograph the stunning scenery before being picked up again and continuing on their way.

On entering Mongolia the landscape changed once again as they travelled along the edge of the Gobi Desert - a barren landscape, yet stunning scenery greeted them.

The famous buildings were replaced by traditional yurts or gers, the interiors of which are beautifully embroidered with stitched upholstery which delighted Nila, who is herself an accomplished needlewoman.

New challenges then took the place of sightseeing including rock climbing, desert treks, riding the local ponies as well as having to cope with the rather primitive ‘facilities’!

On then to the Chinese capital, Beijing, where having eventually found their hotel, they were able to relax in comfort at the end of what had been an amazing adventure.

The club continues to produce amazing numbers of knitted blankets and baby clothes, these made by members and friends from far and near, are sent away to those who need them. It is good to think that our members and friends contribute, even in a small way to provide the warmth and comfort which we all take for granted.
