The Great Johnshaven Bake Off
The Great Johnshaven Bake Off rose to perfection last Saturday when talented bakers and dedicated cake eaters came together to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
A fantastic total of £636.66 was raised for the charity which aims to prevent all types of breast cancer through improving early diagnosis and developing new treatments. Macphie of Glenbervie donated £150 to the fundraising efforts and the organisers would like to thank them for their very generous support.
Local judges Ella Taylor, Bobbie Still from The Ship Hotel and Gary Thompson from The Anchor Hotel judged the entries to the baking categories. Winners were Carol Eaton (filled sponge), Briony Wright (biscuits), Jacob Smith (savoury pastry), Lesley Hughes (fruit cake), Marion Gibb (scones), Emma Pollock (cup cakes) and Carol Eaton (tray bakes).
Four talented bakers bravely entered the live cake-off event which involved a timed decoration of a Christmas cake.
The finished cakes were all excellent with Alan Townsend just pipping the others to the post for best decorated cake.
Shirley Stewart, organiser, declared herself delighted with how the day had gone and thanked all those who made it such a success including the judges, all the local bakers who took part in the competition and contributed baking to the event and the members of the community who came along and lent their support. A lot of fun was had and much cake was eaten!
