A Kincardineshire company has recently developed tyres for the Ministry of Defence to use in bomb disposal vehicles.

Thistle Polymer Composites, at the Bridge of Mondyes, designed the tyres which will be able to take on all terrains.

Fred Powada, the company’s operations manager, explained that they took on the challenge of creating the speciality tyres.

“Thomson’s invention of the pneumatic tyre provided a product which is hard to beat, but for all-terrain capability they have limitations,’’ he said.

‘‘The latest bomb disposal vehicles development team came to Thistle Polymer Composites here in Kincardineshire for tyres.

‘‘They have a multiple layered rubber construction and deflecting cells combined with carefully designed lugs to optimise all terrain capability, and are much superior to any conventional pneumatic tyre in this very demanding application.

‘‘The ‘Cutlass’ vehicle, is right now going into service with the British Army and is a flagship MOD programme to provide our armed forces with state-of-the art hardware.’’

A market development team from the manufacturers, Northrup Grumman in Coventry, recently visited Thistle Polymer Composites with a vehicle.

The meeting’s remit was to discuss future needs for the export markets and its export “launch” at the Counter Terror Expo at Olympia, London, last month.

Thistle Polymer Composites designed special orange “skinned” tyres provided for that launch.
