North East MSP Alex Johnstone has welcomed the Office of Fair Trading’s call for information into the UK petrol and diesel sector.
Mr Johnstone said: “The OFT is calling for submissions regarding a number of claims being made including whether there is a lack of competition between retailers in some remote communities and whether reductions in the price of crude oil are being reflected in falling pump prices.
“I know many people have expressed genuine concerns about petrol prices, and this is especially true in rural areas like Aberdeenshire, so I welcome this move by the OFT.”
Once submissions have been received the OFT will analyse the evidence to determine whether any further action is warranted and intend to publish a summary of findings and any proposed next steps in January 2013.
Nanette Milne, another Conservative MSP for the North East said: “I very much welcome the review by the Office of Fair Trading which will look into how the fuel market across the UK is operating.
“Despite the unprecedented financial constraints the UK Conservative Government is operating within, it has taken action in the last Budget and Autumn Statement to help by, cutting Fuel Duty by 1 pence per litre last year.”
