Stonehaven’s popular Open Air Pool has closed for the season with Friends of the Pool delighted at the seasons figures.

Sunshine helped end the pool’s seasonal run at the weekend with an increase of those attending throughout the summer and attending the midnight swims.

Over 28,000 people attended the Open Air Pool throughout the summer and over 1500 people went to midnight swims.

The total number of people through the turnstiles was 28,394 which was a marginal increase of 221 on last years 28,173.

For the midnight swims the figures saw an increase of 338 with 1513 attending this summer.

The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool made some changes when the pool opened up at the end of May which included coin return lockers instead of having to queue up to get a locker key.

David Dobbie, one of the Trustees of the Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool said: “The 2015 season has really ended on a high, with even the weather finally playing ball for our final day. The Friends of the Pool are absolutely delighted that the figures for this summer are even better than last year, which as we all remember was mostly warm and sunny. By contrast, much of this summer has been cold and wet, but even on poor days, the Pool was reasonably busy.”

David also added that the midnight swims have captured the imagination.

He added: “We believe this is as a result of our promotion of the Pool as a fun place to be regardless of the weather. People are now not only enjoying swimming and having fun in the rain, they’re also telling everyone about it through social media, which is a huge bonus for us. Our midnight swims also capture the imagination. Whether it’s daylight or moonlight, there really is nothing quite like feeling the rain on your back, then ducking down into the Pool’s warm water - but we’ll all now need to wait until 2016 to do that again.”

The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool is a charity, originally formed by the local community to ensure the future of the Open Air Pool when it was threatened with closure in the 1990s. The Friends now work in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council which operates the Pool to a high standard, while the Friends maintain, enhance and promote the Pool.
