Oscars season opens up lending opportunities

The stars of Hollywood Boulevard will be shining bright this weekend and people across Aberdeenshire are being encouraged to be part of Oscars season.

This Sunday, February 24, the winners of the 85th Academy Awards will be announced, and to celebrate the festival of film-making, Aberdeenshire Libraries are encouraging users to make use of the many lending services available to members.

Hit animation Brave – nominated this year for best Animated Feature Film – is just one of thousands of films available to borrow from the libraries service.

Movies from 2013 Best Male nominees Bradley Cooper, Denzel Washington and Hugh Jackman are also available, while previous best picture winners including Slumdog Millionaire, The King’s Speech and The Artist can be picked-up from branches across Aberdeenshire.

The DVDs are available to reserve online and can be collected from any of the 36 branches and four mobile libraries. Adult members can borrow DVDs for £2.20 each for a period of up to two weeks, and this offers library members a great opportunity to celebrate Oscars season by borrowing Hollywood’s best productions.

Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning & Leisure Committee, Cllr Isobel Davidson, said: “The DVD lending service is a very important part of providing a library service that is attractive to people of all ages.

“There are so many films out there for people to enjoy, from classic Oscar winners like American Beauty and Gandhi, to more recent nominees. And it is not just films, there are documentaries, fitness and cookery DVDs all available.

“This is just another great service that makes libraries so exciting, and with the improvements in online access, it has never been easier to get access to these great resources.”

Vice-chair of the committee, Cllr Ron McKail, added: “Libraries are about more than just books, and this great service allows people a brilliant opportunity to pick up a film they have always wanted to see.

“The Oscars showcase the best of the film industry, and all the biggest movies can be enjoyed by people across Aberdeenshire. I’d encourage people to make use of this great service that comes with being a member of Aberdeenshire Libraries.”
