The first Mearns Probus Club meeting of 2012 was held in the Crown Inn with President Ian Williamson chairing.
After wishing a Happy New Year to all those present, and thanking the Secretary Sandy Dunn and the Committee members, Ian then handed over his chain of office to the new President, Charlie Black and invited him to take over.
Charlie Black moved to Laurencekirk with his wife Anne, from Aberdeen some five years ago. He had been involved in the Building Industry and latterly in Horticulture while still in employment there. His wife Anne is a Past President of the Ladies Probus Club in Laurencekirk.
The speaker was introduced, Laurie Smith one of our club members who is now the Vice President for this session. He is a retired Vet who worked in the Orkney Islands and also on the Island of Islay, topics he has spoken of previously.
His subject was the Frenchman Jacques Tati who entertained on stage and on film for many years.
To illustrate his talent and his many attributes, a DVD of him entitled “Les Vacances de M Hulot” was shown to club members.
Made in the early 1950s - and in black and white too, - it proved that good photography, excellent acting and various plots throughout the film, could keep audiences both interested, laughing and entertained without the use of modern sophisticated equipment.
This proved to be a fine change from our usual format and introduced us to a new year of meetings, twice every month.
As the club usually meets on the first and third Monday of the month, and we were starting this year on the second Monday, the next meeting will be on Monday, January 16.
Club members should meet in the Crown Inn from 10 am business commencing at 10.30 am as usual.
