Johnshaven joined in the Great British Beach Clean on Sunday September 20, with a clean-up organised by the Johnshaven SHARK environmental group covering the area north of the Harbour for approximately 1 kilometer.
It proved to be a great success, with 24 people taking part including visitors from Aberdeen and Edzell. Of the volunteers six were under the age of 10.
Niall Young, SHARK Secretary said: “Thanks to all those who took part we were able to collect 16 bags of rubbish and a number of other items, most of them washed up on our beach from elsewhere but sadly some of them also providing evidence of having been dumped there.
“As is common along our stretch of coast, some 60% of the items we picked up were plastic, so we have yet to see the effect of the reduction in plastic bag use brought about by the 5p charge.
“The weather was good, we all enjoyed ourselves, and afterwards we had a lovely lunch in the Village Hall provided by the ladies of the Community Garden Group. A big thank you to all involved.”
