Supermarket and housing plans back on the table

Plans for a supermarket and homes at Mill of Forrest are back on the table after developers submitted a proposal of application notice.

Plans by Drum Property Group and Barratt North Scotland include 500 homes, a supermarket, employment land and a hotel.

The developers this week have said this week that they have reduced the number of homes having listened to Aberdeenshire Council and the general public.

A planning application for 1500 homes and retail were rejected in October last year.

Commenting on the Supermarket proposals, Fife Hyland, Communications Director, Drum Property Group, said: “A sense of frustration within the local community of Stonehaven regarding the lack of supermarket choice has been evident for many years now. That’s why the early delivery of a new store, and infrastructure to support it, forms a key part of the revised proposals for Mill of Forest.

“The combination of housing with new retail at Mill of Forest would crucially generate additional footfall and spending in the town. The examination into the Local Development Plan (LDP) back in 2011 recognised this, with the Scottish Government Reporter stating the solution to the retail problem in Stonehaven would be best achieved ‘through a retail supermarket built as part of an urban extension’. It is quite clear to us that a stand-alone supermarket would greatly affect the local business community and the vibrancy of the town centre.”

It is planned that a supermarket would be delivered within the first phase of development. Also included is “the phased delivery of community facilities, employment land and a hotel, which along with the 500 homes, would be delivered in a phased and planned manner over the lifetime of the project.”

A new bridge is also planned over the A90.

Not only do the Mill of Forest proposals fully accord with Aberdeenshire Council’s key objectives for the future of the town, they also represent a real opportunity to deliver shops, community facilities, homes, jobs and tourism services creating a prosperous and vibrant future for Stonehaven. The community deserves to thrive and flourish like other towns have across Aberdeenshire and the Mill of Forest proposals represent a real opportunity to make this happen.”
