Top marks for the Market Bar

The Market Bar, in Stonehaven’s Market Square, has proved the most popular with local pub punters in our Best Bar of 2014 competition.

Back in October, we asked you to help us find the top pub or bar in the Mearns Leader and Kincardineshire Observer area and the nominations closed, on the Johnston Press organised competition, on November 10.

When all the texts, emails and coupon entries were totalled-up, it was a clear win for the popular town centre watering hole.

The Market Bar polled 49 votes more than their nearest rival, the Scots Corner in Laurencekirk.

Thanks to the support of their regulars, the Market Bar will receive the winner’s plaque in the New Year.

We broke the news to mine host Lorna Anderson, who told us: “I’m delighted!

‘‘It’s a real surprise and I’d like to thank everyone who took the trouble to cast a vote for us.

“We do a lot of charity work and we’ve managed to raise in excess of £63,000 in the last five years.

“I’ll have been here 20 years in April and you do get to know everybody and begin to feel like a family.”

Barmaid Miriam Phillip paid a smiling tribute to Lorna, saying: “She’s a very good boss and she takes care of all the waifs and strays who wander in here!

‘‘She makes sure the pensioners get a good meal inside them, anyway.”

The lunchtime punters all agreed with Miriam, telling us how much they liked the fact it was a purely local bar.

The welcoming atmosphere is certainly a tribute to everyone at the Market Bar and explains why they have received such an accolade.

Last word, however, goes to Lorna Anderson, who said: “The best thing about working here is that I have a great group of staff and regulars.

‘‘After all, people make pubs!”
