Cowie Blacks put the disappointment of recent defeats behind them as they notched up a well-deserved victory against Aberdeen University 2.
With the Blacks second from bottom in Aberdeen and District Netball Association’s 2nd division this was a must win game, and involved coming back from behind to overturn Uni 2’s three goal lead and finish convincing winners, 25 goals to 18.
Uni 2 took first centre after winning the toss and forged an early lead. With some of the Blacks passing going astray Uni 2 increased their advantage to finish the first quarter 6-3 leaders.
The Blacks worked hard to gain some sort of control in the second quarter but after winning the ball in defence they would loose any advantage through poor passing once again. However a solid defence and perseverance by the shooting circle pairing of Buckley and Scott meant they were only two goals behind at half time, with the score 10-8.
With the luxury of two substitutes the Blacks made a number of changes at half time and after a pep talk the team took to the court with a sense of purpose missing from the first half. The changes immediately paid off, as passes linked neatly together into the circle where the shooters converted goal after goal. Uni 2 had nothing to respond with and the Blacks built a significant 18-13 lead to take into the last quarter.
The final quarter heralded more of the same solid play from the Blacks and as Uni 2 became slightly more desperate the Blacks increased their lead. The final score of Uni 2 18 – Blacks 25 gave the Blacks a welcome boost and they can look forward to their next fixture against Newmachar 2 with renewed confidence.
A sound performance by Goalkeeper Sally Carns earned her the opposition’s vote for Cowie player of the match.
