First points on board for Stonehaven U17s

Ferryhill 3

Stonehaven U17 4

After narrowly losing out by the odd goal in five last week at home to Kintore, the Stonehaven U17 squad travelled to Kaimhill to play Ferryhill, another of last season’s promoted sides.

A close game was predicted, but Ferryhill raced into an early lead after four minutes with a simple move.

The Ferryhill defence had been coached to play the offside trap but this backfired after 11 minutes when Lownie played a delightful through ball to split the defence and Reid latched on to the ball and chipped the advancing goalkeeper for the equaliser.

McWilliam and Emslie combined well to fashion an opportunity for the former and then Reid was unlucky to hit the side netting.

Malcolm was having a fine game at the heart of the Stoney defence but no-one met the challenge at a Ferryhill corner after 42 minutes, presenting an easy heading opportunity which was converted.

Stonehaven entered the break level after a McWilliam slide rule pass gave Reid a chance which he converted well after outpacing the very square defence.

After half-time, McWilliam battled well in the penalty area and his shot rolled agonisingly across the face of goal and wide.

Lownie then pushed an opponent in the Stonehaven penalty area as a cross was coming in and Ferryhill gave Mitchell no chance from the spot-kick to take the lead.

Lownie nearly made amends by setting up Ceretti with a chance and shortly afterwards a Ceretti effort was fumbled by the keeper and Milne, following up as all good strikers should, was quick to pounce and coolly slot the ball home for another equaliser.

A Reid break down the right saw him square superbly for Mair who blazed the ball over the bar after making great efforts to get into a good position.

An identikit run down the wing resulted in another fine cross and McWilliam stretched to toe-poke the ball home for what proved to be the winner.

To come from behind three times and go on to win the match speaks volumes for the team spirit of the Stoney squad and if they continue this form, they should do well the Premier League.

Man of the Match for his brace of goals and all-round performance was Cameron Reid.
