Stonehaven welcomed Ellon United to Glenury on Saturday as they looked to keep up the pressure on Banks o’ Dee at the top of the table.

The early minutes of the game saw the ball being exchanged between the teams in the midfield however Stonehaven were forced into an early substitution with McTavish leaving the field after an accidental clash of heads, with young Barry Smith coming on in his place.

The game was sweeping from end to end but neither team were making much impact in front of goal.

A free kick from Armstrong in a good position 35 yards out saw him over hit his effort and it was gathered comfortably by Roberson in the Ellon goal.

Ellon’s Crisp made a long run from the back but his long range shot went well wide of the Stonehaven goal.

A corner from Armstrong on the right evaded the Ellon defence, but it also evaded the Stonehaven attackers.

A deep cross by Armstrong found Smith but his glancing header went just past the upright with the keeper beaten.

As the Hive pressed, a good driving run by Smith saw him find Wyness but he had unfortunately strayed offside.

The first half ended with Stonehaven pressing for an opener but they were just unable to find one.

Ellon started the second half brightly and a good move saw Coyle bearing down, but Stark blocked his low shot with his legs and the defence scrambled the ball clear.

McWilliam had another powerful drive forward and ended with a shot on goal which went wide, when a cross may have been a better option.

A foul by Pyper out on the Hive right saw the defence put under pressure for a few minutes with a string of corners but they held firm to see off the danger.

Minutes later some good hold up play by Wyness saw him feed a good pass to Armstrong, but his powerful shot was well saved by at the near post by Robertson.

Hive thought that they had taken the lead after a cross by Armstrong found McWilliam, and his header appeared to cross the line, but the officials waved away the claims and the ensuing complaints.

Hive were now pressing hard for an opener and were rewarded after some good work on the right saw the ball falling to CORMACK who lashed an unstoppable shot over Robertson in the Ellon goal from 25 yards and into the roof of the net to make it 1-0.

The visitors had a break soon after and some indecision between Stark and Steven Reid almost let Coyle in, but Reid‘s last ditch tackle cleared the danger.

Both side had some half chances in the latter stages, but Stonehaven held out to win 1-0.
