The Hive travelled to Strathmore Park on Saturday to take on Forfar West End in the third round of the GA Engineering Inter-Regional Cup.
Hive were looking to make it through to the quarter-finals and both sides had a few half chances in the opening quarter of an hour however neither goalkeepers were forced into any meaningful action.
After 24 minutes, the hosts were awarded a penalty following a foul from Workman just inside the 18-yard box. Top scorer, Hart, stepped up to fire his penalty low and hard to Capstick’s left. The Hive ‘keeper guessed the right way but, despite getting fingertips to it, was just unable to keep it out.
There was little else of note in the first half other than the loss of new signing James Workman to a nasty looking shoulder injury.
Half time - Forfar West End 1 v 0 Stonehaven
Stonehaven came out in the second half looking to get back level and on the 51st minute Anderson was unlucky to see his header end up over the crossbar.
Just a minute later, McTavish was the next Hive player to threaten the hosts goal but - as was the case a minute previously - he was only able to send his header over the top.
The Hive were awarded a free kick just over a minute later and Armstrong was unlucky to see his excellent effort crash back off the crossbar.
The hosts came close when they broke upfield but Reynolds could only slip his shot wide of Capstick’s left hand post. Capstick was forced to make an excellent close range save a minute later when he saved well from Hart to keep his side in the game.
Hart doubled his tally for the day when he stepped up and sent a free kick to Capstick’s left with under 20 minutes left following a foul by Rattray.
The deficit was reduced when the ball was played out to McWilliam who, in turn, set up substitute Taylor who fired an unstoppable left foot shot into the top right corner.
With five minutes left, Shand got the break of a long ball and beat his man but elected to take on the shot and into side net with Anderson unmarked in the middle.
The Hive threw everything at their hosts as they looked for an equaliser but were unable to make their pressure count and Forfar West End held on to seal their place in the last eight.
