Following an appeal for information about the match in last week’s Leader several readers have come forward to confirm that the match did in fact take place, with local men Colin Durward and Tom McLellan kindly providing photographic proof.

Also caught on camera at the match was 80s pop star Sinitta.

Meanwhile Leader Neil McIntosh recalled: “George Best did play in a charity football match in Stonehaven. The teams were Skean Dhu Select and Northsound Select. I have a programme of the event.

“George arrived by helicopter on Sunday July 29. In the evening there was a cabaret evening in the Skean Dhu Hotel. His team was made up of footballers from Manchester United, Ipswich, Aston Villa, Morton, Dumbarton and Hibs.

“The other team was made up of Highland League players and staff from Skean Dhu hotels and Northsound.”

Author Paul Collier is writing a book on the lesser known games in which football’s first true superstar played and got in touch with the Leader for confirmation that Best brought a team of sports stars/celebrities to the town while on a tour of the country.

Our Leader file of 1984 had a preview piece saying that George and other stars were coming, but no report later to say the game was played.

Mr Collier’s book is now nearing completion and he can be contacted at [email protected] Please copy your memories to this newspaper at [email protected] as we are very interested to hear any other memories of this day.
