Stonehaven’s chances of progressing from their Grill League Cup section are all but over following Saturday’s 8-0 capitulation at the hands of Hermes. The hosts were 1-0 up after 10 minutes. The Hive defence failed to clear the ball and it fell to Hamilton who struck a 20 yard effort past Smith.
Hermes doubled their lead just a few minutes later when a corner from the right was cleared but only as far as McKenzie who curled a right foot effort home from the edge of the penalty area.
Stonehaven created a few half chances. Petrie fired over from the edge of the area then Reid headed straight at Sweeney following a Buchanan corner.
Horne was next to threaten but his shot struck the far post and was cleared by the Hermes defence.
With 10 minutes left of the first half Buchanan really should have reduced the deficit but after being put through by Shand he pulled his shot just wide of the target. Hermes began the second half brightly and were soon 3-0 up. The ball was played out to Courage on the right and his shot was blocked but spun up in the air and looped over Smith in the Hive goal.
It was 4-0 just minutes later as Mathieson failed to clear and the initial shot was saved by Smith only for Watson to tap home the rebound. Stonehaven made a triple substitution with Glass, Duncan and Cormack replacing Mathieson, Petrie and Horne. It was to have no immediate impact however and Hermes were soon 5-0 up after a ball into the box wasn’t cleared and was slotted past Smith.
A throw in from the right was the next to cause problems for the Hive defence as it wasn’t cleared and a shot sneaked in at the near post to make it 6-0.
Hermes completed Stonehaven’s miserable afternoon with two goals in the last few minutes. Firstly Smith went to punch clear but a header from the Hermes striker looped over him. Madle then found himself in plenty space immediately from the restart and ran onto the ball to score.
