Luthermuir made to work

Luthermuir had to come from behind to beat Division One opponents Don Athletic in the first round of the AFC Trophy on September 1.

Luthermuir made a bright start and could have scored four times in the opening 15 minutes.

First Clayton chipped the keeper only for the ball to run along the line before being cleared. Greig then ran on to a cross from Buchan and headed wide.

Chances continued to come for Luthermuir. Greig slipped the ball wide of the target, then Buchan blasted over from ten yards with the keeper to beat.

Having survived, Don Athletic grabbed the lead when an attacker ran on to a long ball and scored with Luthermuir appealing for offside.

Five minutes later, a Miller passback to Wands took a bad bounce and left an attacker with an easy chance to make it 2-0.

Worse was to follow for Luthermuir when their defence failed to close down a Don Athletic player on the edge of the box and he shot home to put his side 3-0 ahead at half-time.

Luthermuir had to do something and they quickly took the game by the scruff of the neck at the start of the second half and Euan Duff blasted the ball home following a Clayton corner.

Five minutes later, Greig was kicked off the ball and a penalty was awarded an Jai Clayton scored from the spot.

Luthermuir got back to 3-3 when Greig was crudely brought down by the goalkeeper. The keeper was sent off and Clayton gave his replacement no chance from the spot.

It looked as if Luthermuir would go on to win, but they were shocked when a long ball was headed on and touched past Wands to give the home side a 4-3 lead.

Luthermuir made it 4-4 when Andy Donald cut in from the left and fired home an unstoppable shot.

Luthermuir sealed a 5-4 victory ten minutes from time when Duff headed home another Clayton corner.
