A kick-boxing champion from Cove is gearing up for the biggest battle of his career so far as he gets ready to fight at Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom.
Dean Sutherland, 16, who trains at the Lion’s Den Martial Arts Academy in Stonehaven, will defend his world title in a special show on Saturday, July 11.
Sutherland will put his ISKA 60kg world belt on the line when he comes up against Irishman Niall Carroll at the iconic Ballroom venue - and he is looking for further success after becoming a two-time world champion last Saturday in Dundee after winning the ISKA 62.5kg title in another super showing.
Malcolm Evans, who runs the Lion’s Den club, said: “This promises to be a fantastic night of kick-boxing at the Beach Ballroom and I’d urge everyone to come along and show their support to the fighters.
“Dean has done brilliantly well in his career so far and is determined to put on another great show on home soil as he is headlining the event.”
It’s an exciting time for Malcolm and the Lions’ Den club as they raise funds to travel to the WKC Championships in Florida later this year. The club has members from just four years old right into their 60s and provides a fantastic environment for all ages to hone their martial arts skills.
Malcolm added: “The trip to Florida is in November and we are busy raising funds for that, which is going really well.
“Last weekend we had 24 hours of great sparring. It was an exceptionally tough challenge but one we all smashed, raising lots of funds for our students as we continue to prepare for the WKC World Championships.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who set up and ran the stall at the Feenin Market raising loads of funds and then coming along to show your support to everyone sparring and keeping us refuelled with food, water, coffee etc.”
