The start of the new season saw a return to action for the Mackie Minis with a trip down to Madras RFC in St Andrews.
There theyplayed against the minis section, the Madrascals, as well as teams from Watsonian’s, Kinross and Perthshire.
With the first matches of the season, and the first proper contact rugby for the P4 squad, you always expect a bit of a tentative start - however, this year it proved to be very different from the usual.
Mackie took to the field in their first game against the hosts and took to the contact element like ducks to water with fierce tackling straight from the off. Madrascals were knocked back a bit but soon rallied to make it a thoroughly competitive game with Mackie running out winners in the end.
Next up came Watsonian’s and Kinross and Mackie repeated the task in hand running out winners by the odd try here and there but making a little heavier weather about it than they needed to - a return to their good teamwork ethics of the first game was required.
When Perthshire took the field the squad had been suitable wound up and the strengths they needed to focus on reiterated and what followed was a much better display against what was probably the best opposition on the day.
A return to the strong defence with the “raptor” well in evidence causing disarray in the opposition and leading to a good number of well worked tries run in by just about all members of the squad. A final victory against a well drilled and strong Perthshire squad meant the P4s left Madrascals undefeated on their first foray into contact rugby.
