STONEHAVEN has a new World Champion in its midst after a local woman fought her way to gold at the WUMA World Kickboxing Championships.
Nicola Gordon came home with the gold in the Intermediate Ladies category, and also scooped two silvers in the Veterans (30 +) category and Light Contact.
The championships took place in Sicily during the start of November and Nicola travelled out with three other members of the Stonehaven Sansum Blackbelt Academy (SBBA)- Malcolm Evans, his son Josh, and Adam Howie.
The quartet netted a haul of medals between them, with Malcolm coming home with a bronze in the Advanced category, and Josh and Adam also returned with bronzes.
Nicola said: “Having returned from Sicily as a World Champion surpasses my expectations.
“I am extremely proud and thrilled that the hard work we have all put in paid off. I would also like to say a special thanks to my Instructor and Coach Sensei Malcolm Evans”.
Malcolm said: “We had a great time at the World Championships and now have Stonehaven’s first World Champion! As a team Scotland done fantastically and we returned with 15 golds, nine silver and four bronze.
“This is a brilliant return for us and just shows what can be achieved through hard work and commitment. The standard at this tournament was very high so to return with a gold, two silver and three bronze is absolutely superb for our club and Stonehaven.”
The event, which was shown live on TV across Italy, ran from November 12 -14. Malcolm Evans runs the Stonehaven SBBA school which was set up in April this year and is currently looking for somewhere in the town to set up a full-time studio.
He said: “We are now, more than ever, looking for somewhere to set up a full-time studio to progress the club within the community and surrounding area and to produce more champions within our Sansum Black Belt Academies.
“We can offer the best training and instruction in a fun and friendly environment. If anyone knows of or has a premises they would like to rent out so I can create a fully kitted out Kickboxing and Fitness studio I would very much like to hear from them.”
