Narrow defeat

Mackie RFC looked to build on their continuing good form against Orkney at Redcloak. Orkney, who were 13 places above Mackie in the Scottish leagues last year, were in for a shock as the home team blasted out of the blocks and after 5 minutes of pressure debutant fly half Anaru Atkins stretched over in the corner for an unconverted try. Learning from last weeks mistakes, Mackie’s kept the pressure on and got second try soon after through Steve Akauola, converted by Michael Levack.

Orkney crept back into the game scoring and converting off a handling error. Undeterred, Mike Levack popped a chip over the advancing defence and Simon Morgan collected and scored under the posts which Levack converted. Ill discipline cost the home side dear with Orkney getting a converted score from a quickly taken penalty. Again the Mackie backs found space on the left wing. Mike Levack found space and laid off the most nonchalant of switch passes to Simon Morgan to cut back on the soft shoulder and bulldoze his way over the line.

The second half saw Orkney with new lease of life and they were rewarded with a quick converted score. Simon Morgan again showed his speed and strength in the tackle as he stayed on his feet incredibly well to drive over for his hat-trick. The squad were on fire again from the kick off and Cameron Gray at full back finished off another backs play with a score in the corner which was unconverted.

Orkney scored two converted tries to leave game in balance with 10 mins to go at 36-35. Some silly penalties were conceded and eventually an unconverted score in the corner with 2 minutes to go left Orkney the eventual winners 36-40.
