Newtonhill exit AFC Trophy

Newtonhill 2

Ellon Amateurs 4

Newtonhill entertained Ellon Amateurs on Saturday in the AFC Trophy second round. Still hampered by injuries manager Kenny Alexander was forced to shuffle the pack yet again.

Hill started well in windy conditions taking the lead after 10 minutes when Steve Law found space inside the box to score from 10 yards.

Ellon equalised when a free kick inside the Newtonhill half sailed over Farquhar into the net.

Newtonhill regained the lead when a Graham Smith cross was headed home by Barraza scoring his 10th goal of the season.

Right on half-time Ellon grabbed a second goal when a hesitant Newtonhill failed to clear and the mistake was punished.

Ellon started the second half the better team using the wind to their advantage, with the Hill defence struggling with the goalkeeper’s long clearances.

Ellon did took the lead when a midfielder was allowed to run from deep with the ball before beating Farquhar at the far post.

With Newtonhill chasing an equaliser Ellon sealed a well deserved win when Macgregor misjudged a high ball enabling his opponent to score his teams fourth goal.

Overall a poor performance from Newtonhill. A disappointing result considering they led twice during the match.

This Saturday Newtonhill entertain the other Ellon team, Ellon Thistle, in the Scottish Amateur Cup second round. Kick-off is at 2pm.

Newtonhill: Andy Farquhar, A Farquhar, A Brooks, M Brooks, MacGregor, Fisken, Law, Kosak, Barraza, G Smith, Johnstone, Subs: T. Smith, Mcgavin, King, L. Farquhar, Alexander.
