Newtonhill march on in style

Newtonhill 2

Newmachar 0 NEWTONHILL elevated themselves to the lofty heights of second place in the league after a hard fought 2-0 victory against a very physical Newmachar side on August 20. The opening exchanges were scrappy with few chances and defences very much on top. Newtonhill were first to create a goal scoring opportunity when a fine S. Christie corner was met by the head of Keith who was unlucky to see his header cleared off the line.

At the other end, Newmachar’s strikers caused problems and a last ditch block by Rae prevent a goal. Hill, trialist Erskine was causing Newmachars defence all sorts of problems with his tenacity and willingness to chase lost causes, and twice he was foiled by fine goalkeeping. On the hour mark the Hill found that elusive breakthrough. A long ball from defence by Alexander sent S. Christie on a run into the Newmachar box. A defender proceeded to hit his clearance off Christie and into the path of Erskine who slid the ball past the onrushing keeper.

As in previous games, The Hill seemed content to sit on their goal advantage which ultimately invited Newmachar pressure.

With five minutes to go, The Hill wrapped up the three points when a fine cross from Keith was brought down on the chest of Erskine and expertly finished low into the corner, sparking wild celebrations from the home crowd.
