Sensei Malcolm Evans takes a look back at the club’s eventful first year:

SBBA Stonehaven is now one year old and what a fantastic year it has been.

At this point I would like to thank my instructor Master Lee Sansum for giving me the opportunity to start this journey. Over the last 12 months the Academy has gone from strength to strength offering classes for everyone from 5 years upwards.

We have competed at many competitions and had great success from Scottish Championships to the WMKF World Championships in Sicily. All my students have made me so proud through the commitment, hard work and effort they have put in and most of all having fun along the way in every class. I would also like to thank all the parents of my Ninjas and Terriers, for all the support they have shown me and the club. Along with them and all my students we have built a great family/friendly environment at the club.

We have won more than 20 trophies and medals in our first year which is testament to all the students and the environment that we train in. At the club we now have two Scottish Champions and a World Champion, and on top of this we already have nine students and myself who have qualified to compete for the Scottish National Kickboxing squad at this year’s WMKF World Championships.

The past 12 months have been very successful for myself as well - I came third at the World Championships, achieved my Black Belt 1st Dan after a five hour physical and mental test and have now been personally asked to become the WMKF Director of Kickboxing for North Scotland which is a fantastic honour.

It is also an exciting time for me as I am currently studying and training for my Self Protection diploma with Master Lee Sansum former body guard to Princess Diana and Peter Consterdine a world renowned body guard and self protection expert.

I’m soon to assist Master Lee at a Strike Force self protection seminar and will be teaching this in my classes and to outside organisations. I am really looking forward to the next 12 months with my main priority being securing premises to set up a Kickboxing and Fitness studio for the Stonehaven area where I can offer a wider range of classes, seminars and top class facilities for beginners to elite athletes.

I would really like to hear from anyone who knows of or might have a suitable venue that they would like to rent out or even a Sports Hall or Church hall that would be willing to let me store some equipment i.e. mats for the floor and punch bags etc this will enable me to take the club to the next level.

Master Lee Sansum added: “I can’t believe it’s already been a year since Sensei Malcolm Evans opened the Sansum Black Belt Academy (SBBA) studio in Stonehaven. He has been such an amazing addition to the SBBA family.

“Malcolm, with the support of his loving wife Nicola, has put so much heart and effort into developing his school. He always behaves in a friendly and professional manner towards all of his students. Sensei Malcolm is very dedicated and driven to succeed in the sport, and is committed to teaching the people of Stonehaven quality Martial Arts. His teaching and bearing reflect an extremely positive and driven individual both in and out of the classroom. We are proud to have him be a part of our team.

“I have complete faith in Malcolm and his abilities to make himself and his school the best in Scotland. We also wish all of the students at the Stonehaven studio continued success. They have been great!”
